U.S. Open

The List Issue: 10 Best Sites Not To Have Hosted An Open

1. The Ocean Course, Kiawah Island, S.C.
Remember how its closing holes made golfers weep in the 1991 Ryder Cup?

2. National GL of America, Southampton, N.Y.
Has what pros hate: howling winds and blind shots.

3. Plainfield (N.J.) CC
Great Donald Ross test. They've cleaned out most of the trees and reclaimed lots of bunkers.

4. Bryan Park GC (Champions) Greensboro, N.C.
Frisky Rees Jones-designed public layout that leapfrogs coves of Lake Townsend on both nines.

5. Crosswater, Sunriver, Ore.
Big and brawny with lots of water hazards.

6. World Woods GC (Pine Barrens), Brooksville, Fla.
Closest thing to Pine Valley (which should host an U.S. Open but won't).

7. Kinloch GC, Manakin-Sabot, Va.
More alternate-shot holes than even National Golf Links.

8. The Honors Course, Ooltewah, Tenn.
Vintage Pete Dye with rocks instead of railroad ties.

9. Dallas National GC.
There is a course in Dallas worthy of an Open.

10. Erin Hills GC, Erin, Wis.
Not a better layout for spectator viewing in the country.
