BRISBANE, Australia (AP) -- New Zealand's Frank Nobilo will assist International captain Greg Norman in the Presidents Cup matches next year against the United States.

"To be part of something he is involved in and believes in as strongly as I do, which is the future of the game, it is probably as good as any highlight I experienced when I played golf," Nobilo said.

The Presidents Cup will be played at Harding Park in San Francisco from Oct. 9-11.

"It was a very difficult decision," Norman said Thursday in a teleconference from his Florida home. "It boiled it down to four, maybe three individuals and of those three, two have a chance of playing on the team."

"Frank was always in the front line because of his knowledge, his perception and his understanding of the game and where the players are at."

The 48-year-old Nobilo retired in 2003 because of injuries. Now an analyst with the Golf Channel in the United States., he played in the Presidents Cup in 1994, 1996 and 1998, the last two times with Norman as a teammate.

"I've known Frank for a long period of time, his career as a player, he's been very successful with a number of tournament victories," Norman said.

Fred Couples will direct the U.S. team.
