Wi's road to Open will detour through home

DUBLIN, Ohio -- U.S. Open sectional qualifiers begin Monday across the country with sites in Memphis, Tenn., and nearby Columbus heavily populated by PGA Tour players. Forty-nine men competing this week in the Memorial Tournament will stay the extra day in central Ohio for the 36-hole marathon that will yield 15 spots in the Open at Congressional CC in less than two weeks.

Not among those hanging around is Charlie Wi. But he's not going to Memphis, either.

Wi has more ambitious plans. Or maybe less ambitious plans, depending on how you look at it.

The California resident, who made the cut on the number Friday at the Memorial, hopes to catch a non-stop Delta Airlines flight Sunday night to Los Angeles and then play the qualifier at Oakmont CC in Glendale, Calif., about 20 minutes from his home in North Hills. The flight departs Port Columbus Airport at 7 p.m. EDT and is scheduled to arrive in L.A. at 8:30 PDT. But any weather delays could scuttle his plans. So could a good finish that would keep him at Muirfield Village GC late into the afternoon.

"To me it was a no-brainer," said Wi, 39, whose only U.S. Open appearance resulted in a missed cut in the 2009 edition at Bethpage Black. "If I can sleep in my own bed and play a course I know about as well as any, then I feel this gives me the best chance."

Wi is one of 94 players at Oakmont playing 36 holes for four spots.

"I'm playing good right now," said Wi, who finished runner-up to David Toms two weeks ago at Colonial. "I don't think the time change will hurt. I'm used to that. But one more day at home ... that's important to me. I feel like I will be fine."
