If you weren't expecting anything noteworthy to come from this week's John Deere Classic, the tuneup for next week's British Open, think again. Paul Goydos shot a 12-under 59 in Thursday's first round at TPC Deere Run to grab a slice of history during his tour of the Midwest.
The PGA Tour veteran finished off his round in style by birdieing the final three holes. In total, he had 12 birdies, including eight while touring the back nine in 28 shots.
Goydos is the fourth player to ever break 60 in a PGA Tour event, joining David Duval (1999), Chip Beck (1991) and Al Geiberger (1977). No player has ever shot better than 59 during a PGA Tour event, though Ryo Ishikawa shot a 58 in a Japan Tour event in May.
Not surprisingly, Goydos' stats in the round were equally as impressive. He hit all but two greens, missed only one fairway and needed just 22 putts to complete his round. He currently holds a five-shot lead over the rest of the field.
