Rose, Fowler fail in U.S. Open qualifier

Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler put on an entertaining show at the Memorial Tournament the day before, but neither was a factor in a 36-hole U.S. Open sectional qualifier on Monday in Columbus, Ohio.

Neither was among the 15 in a field of 120 to earn a berth in the Open next week at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Rose, who won the Memorial, finished four shots outside of earning a berth, three shots from participating in a playoff. Fowler, who finished second at the Memorial, was seven shots from earning a berth.

In a qualifier at the Woodlands, Texas, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's bid ended as a result of inclement weather that pushed the finish to Tuesday, when he was expected at a Cowboys practice. He was tied for 10th at the end of round one of his qualifier.

In Memphis, Tenn., Jordan Spieth, 16, a high school junior who recently tied for 16th in the HP Byron Nelson Championship, failed to qualify for the Open. Spieth will play in the St. Jude's Classic in Memphis this week.

In a Summit, N.J. qualifier, Andrew Giuliani, son of Rudy Giuliani, failed to qualify.
