The bigger news certainly would have been if Tiger Woods opted NOT to play this summer's British Open, especially given his two successful romps through the Old Course at St. Andrews, in 2000 and 2005.
But nothing is a given with Woods these days, and the fact that on Monday he filed his entry form for the Open Championship July 15-18 should be taken as a sign that Woods is looking beyond the neck injury that forced him to withdraw from the Players Championship.
The Open entry marks three tournaments Woods has officially slotted into his schedule for this summer. He has already committed to the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach (where he won in 2000), and the AT&T National at Aronimink (where he is the defending champion and where his Tiger Woods Foundation is the benefiting charity).
Woods is also expected to play the Memorial June 3-6, but has not yet committed because of his neck. Originally fearing the injury would force a significant layoff, Woods learned from an MRI that he had merely an inflamed facet joint, and that a full recovery is expected. Barring any setbacks, he is likely to play the Memorial as his final tune-up before Pebble Beach.
