Love on new tour event: 'We're getting closer'

HONOLULU -- The final vacancy in the 2010 PGA Tour schedule could be filled as early as the end of this week.

Davis Love III said Wednesday at the Sony Open in Hawaii that he hoped a deal could be finalized this week or next for a tournament at Sea Island Resort in St. Simons Island, Ga. The event would fill the open date the week after the Ryder Cup, Oct. 7-10.

"We're getting closer. We might even have something wrapped up by the end of this week," Love, a long time Sea Island resident, said. "There are still a few details to iron out, but it's looking more positive. I was talking to Rick George [PGA Tour President] and we think something could happen in the next two weeks. October seems like a long way away, but if we don't get something done soon and get rolling, it gets tougher to get the tournament organized."

Love said that the accounting and tax firm RSM McGladrey, which has an endorsement deal with another Sea Island resident, former Masters winner Zach Johnson, is in talks with the tour to become the title sponsor. Total purse is expected to be about $4 million.
