It isn't as remotely renowned as Pebble Beach's Lone Cypress, but the Monterey cypress tree behind the sixth green of the North Course at Torrey Pines is a celebrity in San Diego circles, or was, at any rate. A winter storm on Monday night produced winds approaching 60 miles per hour that toppled the the landmark tree.
"Very sickening," city golf manager Jon Maddern told the San Diego Union-Tribune's Tod Leonard. "That has always been the signature hole. In fact, my son summed it up best when he said that's the best location you see out there between both courses. This is definitely heartbreaking."
The tree was estimated to stand 40-feet tall, according to Leonard's story, and the winds in fact snapped it near its base. With the La Jolla coastline as a backdrop, the tree was likely the most photographed in all of San Diego County. The San Diego Open (formerly the Buick Invitational) will be played on Torrey Pines' North and South courses in January.
