The Local Knowlege

Feherty's football debut

David Feherty made his debut as a football sideline reporter on Saturday for the CBS telecast of the Navy-Rice game in Houston. So exactly how much does this native of Northern Ireland know about American football?

"I watch Phil Simms and Jim Nantz and Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson, and I hear that the quarterback has fumbled in the pocket -- I'm looking at his uniform and thinking those are tight pants, where the hell is the pocket? And what's he fumbling for? His car keys?" he said in this interview with the Washington Post.

So how did he do? New York Post Phil Mushnick said he was "a gas."

"With Navy legend Joe Bellino present, Feherty told of his long TD run vs. BC in 1959 -- then passing out in the end zone," Mushnick wrote. "As Bellino confirmed, his calves were so big, Navy's new socks cut his circulation. 'So, effectively,' Feherty said to the camera, 'his feet fainted.'"
