Walker Cup: Eyeballing the yardage at Merion

William Ecenbarger has an interesting story on the importance of caddies at Merion Golf Club, site of the Walker Cup matches next weekend. The Walker Cup players will all be using Merion caddies, who will be paid a flat fee of $800 for their work.

At Merion, there are no yardage guides, no GPS devices, no sprinkler heads marked, no 150-yard markers. The distance from any particular point to the pin is determined solely on the caddies' expertise and experience. In other words, an educated guess.
