At this pace, who would want to play with him?

Michael Whitmer of the Boston Globe had this note from the Deutsche Bank Championship in Monday's paper:

"Ben Crane went out first as a single and needed 3 hours 19 minutes to plod his way around TPC Boston."

Three hours, 19 minutes? As a single? What does it say about the pace of play on the PGA Tour in general and of Crane specifically that were he playing ahead of a foursome in Scotland, the foursome would have asked to play through?
