The Local Knowlege

Charity is the loser in a recession

The most benevolent tournament on the PGA Tour typically is the FBR Open in Scottsdale, Ariz., which in 2008 distributed $8.6 million to charities in 2008. So how big a hit did its benevolence endure because of the recession? Fifty percent, alas.

The Phoenix Business Journal reports that the Thunderbirds, the group that operates the FBR Open, will distribute $4.3 million to charities this year, still a substantial sum, but a startling reduction.
