From Derrick Goolde in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on the reaction of the St. Louis Cardinals to news that Chris Smith's wife Beth had died in an automobile accident:
"Chris Carpenter and other Cardinals were saddened Sunday when they learned Chris Smith, a professional golfer and close friend with many Cardinals, had lost his wife in a car accident in Indiana over the weekend. Smith's wife, Beth, was killed and their two children were critically injured. Smith, who is on the PGA Tour, had befriended many Cardinals and become a regular around the team in recent years. 'Anybody who has been a part of this team since I've been here knows him and his family,' Carpenter said. 'We're thinking of him.'"
