Rees on Dubsdread: A U.S. Open candidate?

Golf course architect Rees Jones had an opportunity to admire his own handiwork at Cog Hill's Dubsread Course in Lemont, Ill., site of the BMW Championship in September. Jones, who was given the task of renovating the course that was designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee, played there last week.

His verdict? "Look at this," he told Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune. "This is not top 100? If it were by an ocean, it would be top 20."

Dubsdread once was a fixture on Golf Digest's "America's 100 Greatest," but fell from the list in 2005.

Jones even went so far as begin lobbying for a U.S. Open to be awarded to Dubsdread, a privately owned public course. "It has all the necessities to be a U.S. Open candidate," he said.
