Sergio Garcia has apologized for his critical remarks about Augusta National, said in the wake of a poor performance in the Masters. However, his apology need not be interpreted to mean that he wasn't speaking the truth as he sees it.
"I don't like it, to tell you the truth," he had said. "I don't think it's fair, and it's just too tricky. Even when it's dry, you still get mud balls in the middle of the fairway. It's just too much of a guessing game."
Too much of a guessing game? Unfair? Isn't this the very definition of British Open golf, where the bumps and swales can send your ball careening any which way (though seldom towards the hole)? Garcia loves links golf and the British Open.
The conclusion here: It smacks of a rank amateur's typical lament when he plays poorly -- he tends not to like the course.
