Sergio closing on No. 1?

Sergio Garcia has a statistical chance to overtake Tiger Woods in the World Golf Ranking, but you know what they say: There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.

Garcia would have to win the WGC-CA Championship at Doral this week, while Woods would have to finish 27th or worse. The latter is unlikely, but even were both scenarios to play out, would anyone really believe that Garcia is the No. 1 player in the world ahead of Woods, whatever the statistics show?

So someone that took eight months off deserves to be number one? What would that tell everyone else out there? Could you imagine?

"well, Tiger's going to take the next year off, but you guys will never be number one anyway, because that's out opinion, so we're just going to keep him there in an honorary title. Good luck going for second, though".

That's insane. If he doesn't play, every other golfer has the right to relinquish him of his status. It doesn't matter what anyone's opinion is, these things are based on stats- that's it. It's almost like foregoing the season in college football just because USC was voted the preseason number one.
