Corporate chiefs largely (and wisely) avoiding AT&T

The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am historically has been a public playground for CEOs, but the economy apparently is dictating course management these days and many of them have decided the prudent play is to stay home. Out of sight, out of mind.

Ollie Nutt, the tournament director of the AT&T said that several high-profile CEOs have declined invitations to compete this year, San Jose Mercury-News columnist Mark Purdy reports.

"They don't feel good about being here with their companies laying off people and all," Nutt told the paper. "If I were in their same situation, I could see how they feel that way."
