"Better than a young Tiger Woods"

Rory McIlroy, 19, opened the Dubai Desert Classic with an eight-under par 64 that placed him in the lead and drew accolades from Mark O'Meara, who was asked the obligatory questions about comparisons with Tiger Woods at a similar age.

O'Meara, who shot 77 playing alongside McIlroy on Thursday, told the Scotsman, "Ball-striking wise at 19, he's probably better than what Tiger was at 19. His technique I think is better. Certainly Tiger has developed his game and swing over the years and made modifications to be able to hit the ball pin-high, but Rory is already doing that and he's 19, so he's already a step ahead."

The Scotsman headline stated that "McIlroy is better than a young Tiger Woods."

Comparisons are entertaining, but seldom revealing. Woods did not make a cut in a PGA Tour event until he was 19, when he tied for 41st in the Masters, and he did not contend in a tour event until he was a few months shy of his 21st birthday.

Well I think the most pointed line of your post is the one you make towards the end “ Comparisons are entertaining but seldom revealing.” I have immense faith in the abilities of the young kid to do really well in professional golf and he has had a stellar junior golf career. But, it would be unfair to burden him with expectations and at the same time also unfair to the great man, Tiger Woods, by pitting a talented player who has just taken his first few steps in international golf against a man who has achieved almost everything that there is to achieve.

Rory Mcilroy is not the first, and I am sure that he is definitely not the last player who will be compared to Tiger and it is more of a media gimmick than anything else. Why else would the Scotsman come out with a headline like that. I am sure that is not what Mark O Meara intended to say and it definitely did not indicate that he thinks Rory will do better than Tiger.

For starters, I hope young Mcilroy goes on to win this tournament because he has shown in the last few tournaments that he has the potential to match the best till the very end. He just needs to go one step ahead and seal a victory for himself.

Play well
