The Local Knowlege

Crunching the TPC Numbers

Eight Tournament Players Club courses have hosted PGA Tour events in the first seven months of this season. Three more remain: The Deutsche Bank Championship in August will be held at TPC Boston as part of the FedEx Cup, while the Frys.com Open will be played at both TPC Summerlin and TPC Canyons in October.

Here's how each venue stacks up so far, according to scoring average:

TPC Scottsdale (FBR Open) ... 69.845
TPC Deere Run (John Deere Classic) ... 70.229
TPC Las Colinas (EDS Byron Nelson Championship) ... 70.237
TPC River Highlands (Travelers Championship) ... 70.846
TPC Avondale (Zurich Classic) ... 72.019
TPC Sugarloaf (AT&T Classic) ... 72.064
TPC Southwind (Stanford St. Jude Championship) ... 72.196
TPC Sawgrass (The Players Championship) ... 73.248

Keep in mind that there is a mixture of par-70, -71 and -72 layouts here, but these days with the abundance of 300-yard drives, players can make 4s on par 5s just as easily as they can make them on par 3s.

Even so, you can expect very low scores at the TPC Boston in August. Last year, Tiger Woods won at -16, the year before Olin Browne finished first at -14 and the year before that Vijay Singh shot -16. In the inaugural year of the event in 2003, Adam Scott finished the tournament at -20.

After a grueling stretch of majors, players will be able to "Relax, it’s FedEx."
