CI Podcast/USC's Jeffrey Kang

Jeffrey Kang.jpegUSC sophomore Jeffrey Kang claimed his first college title last week at the Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii, defeating Texas' Jordan Spieth in a playoff after the pair shot 11-under 205s. It was the second straight top-six finish for Kang, a 20-year-old from Fullerton, Calif., and the fifth top-six finish of his young college career.

Kang joins me on today's podcast to talk about the victory and about why this year's Trojans squad might actually be better than last year's Pac-10 champions.

Here is a look at Kang's record during the 2011-12 season:

CI Podcast/Arizona's Rick LaRose

Rick LaRose.jpegThe Arizona Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Arizona, begins Jan. 30, kicking off the spring semester of the 2011-12 men's college season. Seemed only appropriate then to have the Wildcats' coach, Rick LaRose, as my podcast to preview the event as well as provide his insights from an impressive, 34-year career coaching college golf.

Do yourself a favor before listening to the podcast and read LaRose's bio, particularly the information at the bottom, to get a glimpse at what a dynamic life LaRose has lived.

CI Podcast/Alabama's Cory Whitsett

Whitsett Western win.JPGSo which college player had the best finish to 2011?

You can make a good argument that the answer is Cory Whitsett. The Alabama sophomore won a playoff over Missouri's Jace Long and San Diego State's Todd Baek to claim the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic title right before Thanksgiving. Whitsett shot a seven-under 206 to become the third Crimson Tide golfer in school history to win the event.

Whitsett Patriot win.JPGWhitsett then made it two-for-two in college golf's "off" season with a three-shot victory over teammate Bobby Wyatt at the inaugural Patriot All America event outside Phoenix just prior to New Year's. A 14-under 199 earned him the champion's fighter pilot jacket (right) in an event that honorary the military (participants carried bags inscribed with the name of a fallen service member with the bags to be auctioned to help raise funds for Folds of Honor).

Whitsett joins me for the first podcast of 2012, talking about his double dip to close 2011, the tweaks he's made with his swing this fall, Alabama's chances at winning a national title this spring and who he thinks will claim the BCS title on Monday (hint: he does attend Alabama).

CI Podcast/SMU's Josh Gregory

Josh Gregory SMU.jpegWhen alma mater called on Josh Gregory last spring, the 1997 graduate at SMU couldn't turn her down. In the midst of winning a second straight NCAA title as the men's coach at Augusta State, Gregory made the difficult decision to leave the school and accept a new challenge in trying to build the Mustangs in a regular top-25 program.

In this week's Podcast, I talk to Gregory about the move back to Dallas, the challenges he has faced during the transition and the pressure that comes with his new job given the expectations of the SMU faithful after his impressive run with the Jaguars.

CI Podcast/Okla. State's Alan Bratton

Alan Bratton.jpegI'm not exactly sure how Alan Bratton could have gotten off to a better start to his career as head coach of the women's golf team at Oklahoma State than what's taken place the last few weeks. Two tournaments—the Dale McNamara Invitational and the Windy City Collegiate—two victories in different, confidence-boosting fashions have allowed the former Cowboy All-American to settle in with a team that included just one senior, three transfers and a fair number of questions starting the 2011-12 season.

In this week's podcast, I caught up with Bratton and learned about his mindset in taking over the program, along with the quick transition that has created a genuinely positive vibe among the Cowgirl roster.

CI Podcast/UCLA's TIffany Lua

Tiffany Lua 2011-12 headshot.jpegA seven-player punch is how UCLA junior Tiffany Lua described her team's roster in the midst of the Bruins winning the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview last weekend. It's hard not to agree with the All-American in her assessment of the depth on the roster of the defending NCAA champions.

Lua, Stephanie Kono, Lee Lopez and Ani Gulugian are all back from the team that won the national title last May. Brianna Do, the odd woman out a year ago, is the reigning U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links champion. Incoming freshman Erynne Lee has reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur three times before even playing her first college event and fellow frosh Kyle Roig is an AJGA All-American. Deciding who take on the road and who must remain back on campus is going to be a difficult but envious challenge for Bruins coach Carrie Forsyth and assistant Alicia Um-Holmes.

In this week's podcast, I talk to Lua about the opening victory in Tennessee and the approach that the UCLA squad is taking in 2011-12 as it tries to defend its NCAA title.

CI Podcast/Justin Thomas & Patrick Rodgers

Justin Thomas.jpegPatrick Rodgers head Stanford.jpegFor the first edition of the Campus Insider Podcast of the 2011-12 college season, I've got a double feature.

Joining me today are Alabama's Justin Thomas (left) and Stanford's Patrick Rodgers (right), who both claimed victories in their first college tournaments in the past few weeks.

Thomas, from Goshen, Ky., won the Carpet Capital Classic with rounds of 71-70-65 at The Farm in Dalton, Ga.

Rodgers, a native of Avon, Ind., shot a 68-70-68 at Olympia Fields (Ill.) CC to be medalist at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational.

The pair are two members of an impressive incoming freshmen class that has many people debating whether it might not be one of the best collective groups to hit campus in a long time.

CI Podcast/Daytona's Mitsuki Katahira

MitsukiKatahira.jpgThis week's guest is Daytona State's Mitsuki Katahira. Perhaps the name doesn't immediately connect with you, but it should. The 21-year-old from Japan is ranked No. 1 in the recently created Women's World Amateur Golf Ranking and No. 2 in the Golfstat Cup. While playing at a junior college, Katahira has developed a resume the envy of any college player in the country. In nine starts this season, she's won six times and finished second in her other three starts, claiming a 70.92 stroke average in the process.

Here is her college record this year, her team having played in six tournaments hosted by Division I schools.

CI Podcast/Purdue's Devon Brouse

Devon Brouse.jpegThis week's guest is Purdue men's and women's coach Devon Brouse, who joined me after taking a red eye back from California after the Boilermaker women's team claimed the title at The Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn. It was the team's third victory of the 2010-11 season, and second triumph in its last two starts, boding well for a squad that's looking to defend its NCAA title later this spring.

Here's a look at how the Purdue women have fared this season:

CI Podcast/Michigan's Lion Kim

Lion Kim.jpegThe Masters is less than a month away, and Michigan senior Lion Kim is starting to get particularly excited about the opportunity he's going to have to compete in the year's first major as one of the six amateurs in the field. Kim, the 2010 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion, talks about his pre-tournament trips to Augusta National as well as the difficulty of playing in college events this spring while knowing what's to come in April.

Here's a look at Kim's college record during the 2010-11 season.
