Lots of changes in the second edition of the Division I women's coaches poll, starting with a new name. Incorporating the coaches' association's new title (Women's Golf Coaches Association), this is the first edition of the Golf World/WGCA women's coaches' poll.
Meanwhile, there's also a new No. 1 team in the land.
Duke's runner-up finish at the Cougar Classic helped propel the Blue Devils into the top spot despite receiving only two of the 29 available first-place votes.Indeed, voters appeared to be torn between what teams have done thus far in a limited number of starts in the 2012-13 season and the potential that schools have when looking at the players on team rosters. So it is that nine different schools received first-place votes, more than in any poll since Golf World resumed them in 2001-02.
It's the 40th time overall that Duke has
been No. 1 in the Golf World poll but the first time since May 2008.
Florida, winner at the Cougar Classic and runner-up at the Dale McNamara Invitational, jumped into the No. 2 spot, receiving nine first-place votes. It matches the highest spot the Gators have ever reached.
Other interesting quirks to the poll include:
* Preseason No. 1 Alabama falling to No. 6. It's the first time the Crimson Tide have been out of the top five in the Golf World poll since April 2010
* Preseason No. 2 UCLA falling to No. 10. It's the first time the Bruins have been out of the top five in the Golf World poll since October 2009 and the first time they've been out of the top seven since May 2007.
* Preseason No. 10 LSU fell out of the top 25, marking the first time since March 2008 that the Tigers have been unranked.
* Texas Tech, meanwhile, went from unranked to No. 13 marking the first time that the Red Raiders have appeared in the poll since its resumption.
Defending NCAA champion Nova Southeastern, the preseason No. 1 in the Golf World/WGCA women's Division II coaches' poll, remained in the top spot in the most recent edition. The Sharks played at the Yale Women's Fall Invitational, taking first place in the Division I tournament, to claim all 19 first-place votes.
St. Edward's moved in the the No. 2 position after starting the 2012-13 ranked fourth. Lynn claimed the No. 3 spot with Barry and Rollins rounding out the top five.
Four new teams joined the top 25: No. 14 Florida Tech, T-18 S.W. Oklahoma State, No. 20 Dallas Baptist and No. 25 Columbus State.
Methodist maintained the No. 1 spot in the most recent Golf World/WGCA women's Division III coaches' poll, sweeping all 20 first-place votes. The Monarchs opened the 2012-13 season with two wins in their first two starts, at the Piedmont Fall Invitational and the O'Brien National Invitational.
