CI Podcast/San Diego St.'s J.J. Spaun

JJ Spaun action.jpegAs he begins play today at the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford GC, San Diego State senior J.J. Spaun is riding a three-tournament winning streak and has become a dark-horse candidate for national player of the year honors. The 21-year-old from San Dimas, Calif., has played in eight events during the 2011-12 season, posting four top-three finishes, five top-10s, just one showing outside the top-12 and a 70.63 stroke average.

Does he deserve POY consideration? Listen to the podcast and you be the judge.

THE FAB FIVE
My look at the top five teams in the country right now

Texas logo.jpeg1. Texas (Last week: 1)
If baseball has the dog days of August, then these are the dog days of college golf, at least for the Longhorns, who have two more tournaments after their start this weekend in Augusta before the Big 12 Championship. On the plus side, they've got plenty of time to sharpen things for the postseason. On the minus side, they've got plenty of time to lose some confidence. Says here, John Fields will have them doing more of the former.

UCLA women holding steady at No. 1

Is it the calm before the storm ... or just the way the wind is blowing this year. Whatever metaphor you prefer, the fact remains that UCLA hasn't had its No. 1 ranking in the Golf World/NGCA women's coaches' poll threatened much in the 2011-12 season to date.

Of course it helps that the Bruins have finished first in four starts and second in their remaining three tournaments to date, offering little reason to think that the defending NCAA champions have reason for concern as the spring season rolls on.

Victories propel Whitsett, Popov to top honors

Golf World College Players of the Week
March 19-26

MEN
Cory Whitsett head shot.jpegCory Whitsett, Alabama
Entering Sunday's final round of the Linger Longer Invitational, it looked as the tournament's defending champion would be relinquishing his crown. The sophomore was in 20th place at the Great Waters course at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga., five strokes back of the leaders. But a closing 64, tying a school record, put Whitsett into a playoff for medalist honors with Georgia's Nick Reach, where he proved victorious after four holes.

Whitsett's final-round rally included a double eagle on the second hole, when he holed out an 8-iron, and a eagle on the 16th, when he holed out another 8-iron.

His performance also helped the Crimson Tide repeat as team champions, the squad shooting a 26-under 838 to defeat SEC rival Georgia by a comfortable 14 strokes.

WOMEN
Sophia Popov head shot.jpegSophia Popov, USC
The sophomore from Germany was the only player to break par in the rain-shortened Battle at Rancho Bernardo (Calif.), claiming medalist honors with a two-under 142 at Rancho Bernardo GC to beat Texas A&M's Patricia Garcia by two strokes. The victory was Popov's first in the 2011-12 season but the fourth of her career, leaving her one shy of the Trojans career victory mark set by Irene Cho.

En route to the individual victory, Popov also played a key role in USC claiming the team title by two strokes over Arizona State. It was the Trojans first victory in the 2011-12 season.

CI Podcast/Clemson's Corbin Mills

Corbin Mills headshot.jpegIt's become a yearly tradition here at the Podcast for me to interview a college golfer who is preparing to play in the Masters. This time around, it's Clemson junior Corbin Mills, winner of the U.S. Amateur Public Links championship last July at Bandon Dunes.

Thus far in the 2011-12 season, the 21-year-old from Anderson, S.C., has carded a 71.1 stroke average, with one win (Jerry Pate), two top-fives and five top-15 finishes in seven starts.

For Fullerton's Fowler, golf no longer just her brother's thing

Taylor Fowler action.jpgThis story originally appeared in the March 19 issue of Golf World.

Taylor Fowler couldn't help but feel disappointed after last month's Folino Invitational. Having signed for a final-round 72, giving her a career-best eight-over 221, the CSU Fullerton junior checked the leader board only to see she had fallen one shot shy of the individual title. Quickly her mind raced through all the strokes she wished she could have back over the previous three days, most glaringly a six-foot birdie putt missed on her final hole.

"I was a little bummed," said the 20-year-old afterward, "but it's definitely got me motivated to look for a win out here."

Fowler's emotions speak to her maturation as a golfer. Five years earlier, she had no interest in a game she considered too slow. Never mind her older brother, Rickie, was in the midst of an All-American career at Oklahoma State and headed for future PGA Tour stardom. Taylor's father, Rod, couldn't convince her to follow Rickie's footsteps, let alone play 18 holes with him.

My look at the top five teams in the country right now

It was a home game at the Morris Williams, but the Longhorns didn't just squeak out a win, either. The 16-stroke victory over New Mexico, with Julio Vegas, Jordan Spieth and Dylan Frittelli all sharing medalist honors suggests that there is still lots of life left in these boys from Austin. I also like the perspective from coach John Fields afterwards: "We needed to re-group; we did. We can enjoy this for the next day or so then start preparing for the next one."

Coaching change paying off for Yokoi, Long Beach State

Mickey Yokoi.jpgKevin Lim isn't used to picking team meals or deciding which uniforms his teammates will wear.

That's one of the prerogatives the Long Beach State senior golfer, along with fellow captain Kevin Roy, is enjoying with his third coach in four years.

"We're used to all our other coaches picking," Lim said. "They'd ask us, but the final decision was always on them. Now we can pick whatever we want. I think it's really cool. What I think of it is giving us the choices so we can be responsible for them."

It seems to be working. Long Beach State added its second title of the spring under newly-appointed coach Mickey Yokoi (right) at the Bandon Dunes Championship last weekend. The unranked 49ers came back from a seven-shot final-round deficit to tie Washington, the seventh-ranked team in the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf coaches' poll, to share the team title.

Texas forever ... or at least another few weeks

While voting for the latest Golf World/Nike Golf men's coaches polls closed on March 16, a day prior to Texas finishing off its convincing victory at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate, it seemed that the voting coaches must have had an inkling that the Longhorns were en route to their fifth victory of the 2011-12 season. For the fourth straight poll, UT earned top honors, claiming 13 of the available 18 first-place votes.

Spaun, Reto claim week's top player honors

Golf World College Players of the Week
March 19-25

MEN
J.J. Spahn head shot.jpegJ.J. Spaun, San Diego State
The senior from San Dimas, Calif., earned his second and third career victories within a five-day span this past week when he shot a four-under 212 to take the title at the Callaway Farms Invitational and then a 15-under 201 to take the title at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson. Spaun's total at Omni Tucson National Resort was 24.48 strokes lower than the average 54-hole score in the tournament as he beat runner-up Zack Blair of BYU by four stroke and then was 13-strokes better than the foursome tied in third place.

Spaun's performances were also key to the Aztecs claiming the team title in each event.

"J.J. has taken his leadership role to another level, which we obviously needed these last two weeks," said SDSU men's coach Ryan Donovan. "He has set the tone for what we expect to accomplish as a team and I know the guys will respond. It is always great to win and I am proud of the team and their perseverance. I am fortunate to coach this group of players and I know our experience will help us down the road."

For the season, Spaun has finish T-12 or better in six of his seven starts while posting a 71.10 stroke average.

WOMEN
Paula Reto action.jpgPaula Reto, Purdue
Just three weeks after her teammate, Laura Gonzalez-Escallon, tied the school single-round record with a 65 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, the junior from South Africa broke the mark with a eight-under 64 at Forest Hills GC in Augusta, Ga., en route to a nine-under 217 and a 10-stroke triumph at the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate.

The record-breaking round included birdies on five of her last six holes, including the last four. "I called my coach [Caroline Haase] over on No. 13 and asked her why I was hooking my shots, and she told me to complete my backswing," Reto said. "I did, knocked a 9-iron to five feet, and it was smooth sailing into the clubhouse. I kept giving 100 percent all the way in, taking it one shot at a time and really staying in the moment."

A year ago Reto finished second in the tournament. Combine the six rounds in the two events and Reto has a 69.5 stroke average at Forest Hills GC.
