College Players of the Week, Sept. 27-Oct. 3

MEN
Pontus Widegren.jpegPontus Widegren, UCLA
A final-round 69 at Karsten Creek GC propelled the sophomore from Sweden to a two-under 214 total and his  first college victory at the Ping/Golfweek Preview. Widegren finished two strokes clear of Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein and Georgia's Hudson Swafford. In the process, he became the first Bruin golfer to win an outright individual title since Kevin Chappell won the 2008 NCAA Championship and the second to claim the Fall Preview title, joining John Poucher in 2003.

Honorable mention: Lion Kim, Michigan
The senior made a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole and a 45-foot par putt on the 18th at North Shore CC outside of Chicago to win the Windon Memorial Classic individual title by two strokes over Ohio State's Bo Hoag (with a six-under 207) and help the Wolverines take the team title by one over Ohio State

WOMEN
Brittany Altomare.jpgBrittany Altomare, Virginia
The sophomore from Shrewsbury, Mass., was a double winner at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Her two-under 70 during the final round at Red Sky GC in Vail, Colo., gave her a four-under 212 total, good enough to claim medalist honors for the first time in her college career by a stroke over Tulane's Janine Fellows. She is the fourth Virginia golfer to ever win an individual title.

Moreover, Altomare helped propel the Cavaliers to the team title, UVa shooting a final-round one-under 287 to move from third to first place, seven shots better than runner-up Arizona.

Honorable mention: Sara-Maude Juneau, Louisville
For the fourth time in her career, the senior won an individual title, shooting a final-round 69 at the William K. Warren Irish Invitational to finish one under par for the tournament.
