Incoming OU golfer dies in car accident

Sad news out of Oklahoma as Kyle Lewis, a junior golfer who had signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Sooners men's team starting this fall, was killed in a single-car accident July 26.

Kyle Lewis.jpegLewis, from Shawnee, Okla., reportedly was alone, driving home from a All-State golf tournament in Broken Arrow, Okla. Earlier in the day, Lewis was awarded the Jim Thorpe Boys Golfer of the Year trophy from the Oklahoma Golf Coaches Association as the state's top male golfer.

The 18-year-old was valedictorian of his class at Bethel HS and had been named a HP Scholastic All-American by the AJGA in 2009.

"The Oklahoma golf family is extremely saddened," said OU men's coach Ryan Hybl. "Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with Kyle's family. Kyle was a tremendous person and would have done great things at OU, and not just on the golf course. We will miss him."
