Walker watching

TULSA, OKLA.--There's a school of thought that says if you had already been picked for the U.S. Walker Cup team, the extra motivation to play well this week at the 109th U.S. Amateur Championship might not be very high. At the same time, others argue you might be even more inclined to knuckle down this week at Southern Hills, wanting to prove the USGA knew what it was doing by choosing you for the team that will play next month at Merion GC outside Philadelphia.

Whichever philosophy you identify with, here's how the eight players already on the Walker Cup team fared during the stroke-play portion of the championship.

Bud Cauley  72-70--142 (T-5)
Brian Harman   71-74--145 (T-20)
Morgan Hoffmann   74-72--146 (T-32)
Nathan Smith  73-73--146 (T-32)
Rickie Fowler   71-76--147 (T-45)
Drew Weaver   73-76--149 (T-88)
Adam Mitchell   73-78--151 (T-122)
Brendan Gielow   81-73--154 (T-177)

As for some of those considered many believe are on the short-list for the final two spots, here's how they fared:

Tim Jackson  68-72--140 (medalist)
Cameron Tringale  69-74--143 (T-9)
Dan Woltman  72-72--144 (T-14)
Mike Van Sickle   73-72--145 (T-20)
Bronson Burgoon   73-73--146 (T-32)
Brad Benjamin   77-73--150 (T-105)
Patrick Reed   83-74--157  (T-230)
