With sectional qualifying taking place yesterday for next week's U.S. Open, six collegians (and eight amateurs overall) earned spots in the field at Torrey Pines. They join Alabama's Michael Thompson (exempt as the U.S. Amateur runner-up). Just missing a spot (losing in a playoff nine player for two spot playoff) was Augusta State men's coach Josh Gregory.
**(Editor's note, Thurs., June 5: Just got word that Rickie Fowler is now in the field off the alternate list as Shawn Micheel has withdrawn from the tournament. He and Tway roomed together this past season in Stillwater.)**
