For many golfers who live in cold climates, winter is when the game takes a break. For the members of the John Caliendo Shore Winter Golf League in New Jersey, however, golf goes on from late October to early April. Two dozen Thursday tournaments with divisions for amateurs and professionals are held across the Garden State for the league's 156 members -- only an accumulation of snow will cause a competition to be canceled in this association that began in 1961-62. They'll play through flurries, on frozen greens, in temperatures that have dipped into the single digits. At a Feb. 16 event at Knob Hill GC in Manalapan, N.J., it was a relatively balmy 35 degrees when 93 golfers teed off in a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
