He is the new Greg Norman, the old Phil Mickelson, a world-class superstar whose '08 was defined as much by the tough losses as the wins. If Garcia has struggled to realize his vast potential in the 800-pound shadow of Tiger Woods, things didn't change much in the summer Woods wasn't around. Padraig Harrington raced past Garcia down the stretch to swipe the PGA Championship. Vijay Singh beat him in extra holes at the first FedEx Cup playoff tilt. Camilo Villegas did the same in the postseason finale. A victory at the Players and an improved putting stroke, courtesy of his work with short-game maestro Stan Utley, made Garcia's year a good one, not a great one. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So, too, is progress.
