Breaking 80

February 2009

IN 2009, THINK ABOUT MORE THAN SCORE

When you're working on getting better, scores tell only part of the story. I make a custom scorecard for my students that measures all the technique and game-management items we've worked on through the winter.

This card, from my home course, Oakland Hills, shows what I track in my game. Patience is the hardest one: Did I maintain my emotional level throughout the hole? If I did, I check it off. Target is another one: Was I focused on where I wanted the shots to go, not on my score, technique or a bet? I need to focus on swinging in sequence and visualizing my target. The more checks you earn, the better you're getting--regardless of your score.

WORK WITH A MIRROR TO CHECK PLANE

What should you look for when you practice in front of a mirror? Get into your address position, and hold a club across the base of your neck. The club should be parallel with your hips and feet. Your toes should be able to wiggle a little in your shoes--a sign that your weight isn't too far forward. On the backswing, feel your weight move into your right heel, and maintain the same spine angle you had at address. Hold for 30 seconds. When you follow through, feel your right knee touch your left knee, which is straight now. Also, make sure the club (your shoulder line) is at the same angle as it was in the backswing. Your weight should finish on your left heel.
