60th Anniversary: Golf Digest Magazine: 60 Best Tips

Since our first issue in 1950, one mission has persisted: Find the teachers and players with the best instruction, and deliver it in ways that will help golfers play better and enjoy the game more.

When we set out to identify the 60 greatest tips from our 60 years, we again turned to the experts: Golf Digest's 50 Best Teachers in America. After a panel of editors searched the archives, creating a list of finalists, we surveyed the teachers, asking them to grade the tips on a scale of 1 to 10 for: (1) effectiveness, (2) originality, (3) presentation and (4) author prominence. We counted the votes and got our 60.

Winning authors include icons like Hogan, Nelson and Snead, as well as teaching greats Butch Harmon, Davis Love Jr. and Bob Toski. David Leadbetter had the most tips in the 60 best, with five, followed by longtime Golf Digest contributors Rick Smith, with four, and Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Jim McLean, Jim Flick, Chuck Cook, Randy Smith, Paul Runyan and Love Jr.--all with two apiece. But it wasn't only the big guns. Ever heard of Hardy Loudermilk or Kenneth Giovando? You will now. We recognized tips from three women (Nancy Lopez, Lynn Marriott and DeDe Owens), three players on the Champions Tour (Watson, Bernhard Langer and Jay Sigel) and two on the PGA Tour (Ernie Els and Tiger).

Starting here with a Ben Hogan tip from October, 1960, we count down the top 60. We recruited the PGA Tour's Webb Simpson to freshen up the look for the top 10. Here are our all-time best tips, at your fingertips. Register today to view our 60 greatest tips, EVER! These carefully selected tips will help every aspect of your game. Plus when you register you'll be entered for a chance to win a private lesson with Jim Flick, one of the 10 best instructors in the game!
