If you hit a lot of fat shots, hover the club so it's just above the ground (see photo). When you sole the club at address, you pre-set fat contact. By hovering it, you set up a solid strike. It's easier to hover the club if you gently push your elbows toward each other, as if you're holding a grapefruit between them.
Another cause of fat shots is flipping the club at the ball, with the clubhead passing the handle. Avoid this by feeling the left wrist slightly bowed at impact.
Make slow-motion practice swings into the tire of a cart to feel your left wrist bowed and right wrist bent. That will encourage you to hit ball then turf.
