My bearish view of the Fall series

Two of the PGA Tour's "fall series" tournaments in October have purses of $6 million and $5 million. Both amounts are higher than three tournaments played in mid-summer. Obviously, the fall series is far more than a postscript to the FedEx Cup. Although large purses for these late-season events show how vibrant the PGA Tour is, I believe the tour was fortunate to negotiate the fall series with title sponsors before the onset of an economic downturn. The money companies spend on golf is often viewed as discretionary, and I wonder if the purses would be as big -- or if the tournaments would even exist -- if the tour had to renegotiate with sponsors tomorrow.
