2010 Hot List

The Best Bags Around

These cool carry and cart bags have refined their utility and styling

July 2010
Golf bags are like golf balls: They look so similar it's difficult to see differences at first glance. So what makes the 21 bags on our annual Hot List stand out? The carry bags are light but sturdy, innovative without being a Rubik's Cube, and functional without being showy (stand mechanisms that didn't work easily or practically gored us received lower marks). The cart bags have tops that keep clubs organized and protected as well as ample storage, with pockets that are easily accessible when the bag is strapped to the cart. The Gold and Silver medalists presented here were selected by our Hot List judges.
BAG BOY REVOLVER PLUS
MANUFACTURERS LISTED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER

BAG BOY REVOLVER PLUS

PRICE: $180

WEBSITE: bagboycompany.com

Like previous Revolver cart bags, the Revolver Plus has a Lazy Susan top (below) that rotates 360 degrees for easy access to clubs. The full-length tubes are durable, and the molded club clips lock irons and woods in place to prevent damage. Other features include two external putter clips (replacing the putter wells on last year's version) and an insulated cooler pocket.

DATREK ASSAULT

DATREK ASSAULT

PRICE: $180

WEBSITE: datrek.com

This cart bag keeps you organized better than a personal assistant. Two external wells accommodate your putter and another go-to club. Three fleece-lined valuables pockets and a magnetic ball pocket with an easy-access ball drop are smart extras, and two rubber handles allow for easy lifting. The cart-strap sleeve (below) prevents slipping and has a nifty, easy-to-reach pocket.

NIKE COLLEGIATE

NIKE COLLEGIATE

PRICE: $150

WEBSITE: nikegolf.com

Few walk and carry more than college golfers, so it made sense for Nike to consult them. The result is a bag that's lightweight (five pounds), comfortable (air in the straps distributes weight evenly across the shoulders) and durable (the polypropylene plastic used for the base is flexible and strong). A clip (below) makes changing from a double strap to a single strap a cinch.

OGIO OZONE

OGIO OZONE

PRICE: $150

WEBSITE: ogio.com

Six pounds is a little more than we'd like to lug around, but this carry bag's cool features make up for it. Ogio rethinks everything, including small details like a Velcro strip to hold your glove and a magnetic scorecard pocket. The sloped top (below) provides easy access to all clubs and features dividers that separate woods from irons. A raised, sturdy rubber handle allows for easy lifting.

OGIO SYNCRO

OGIO SYNCRO

PRICE: $180

WEBSITE: ogio.com

This cart bag's name is appropriate because each of its 13 pockets is in exactly the right place, including a magnetic ball pocket (below) that leaves you wondering why the zipper was invented. An "isolation chamber" pocket can separate wet gear from other items, and a 15-way top reduces club shifting and shaft damage without hindering your ability to maneuver clubs in and out.

PING HOOFER C-1

PING HOOFER C-1

PRICE: $180

WEBSITE: ping.com

Carry bags need accessible pockets when on the shoulders of golfers, and the latest Hoofer addresses this with redesigned, roomy ones. The Hoofer base, a hallmark of Ping, stays flush to the ground when set down (below). An internal bag frame increases leg extension and tightens retraction. The Hoofer C-1 weighs just five pounds, lighter than the previous Hoofer model.

SUN MOUNTAIN SLX

SUN MOUNTAIN SLX

PRICE: $170

WEBSITE: sunmountain.com

Sturdy without being bulky, the four-pound SLX doesn't skimp on features. A "slide" that joins the crossing shoulder straps makes it easier to adjust the level of the bag and less cumbersome to put on and take off. The Y-shape spring (below) helps the bag's legs deploy and retract quickly. Large triangular foot pads keep the legs from sinking into wet turf or slipping on slick surfaces.

TAYLORMADE PURE-LITE

TAYLORMADE PURE-LITE

PRICE: $150

WEBSITE: taylormadegolf.com

The straps have webbing designed to distribute weight evenly across the shoulders, and EVA foam enhances comfort. Three snaps securing frequent-use items like a phone or GPS device is a whiz-bang idea if you don't mind paying extra for the pouches (below). The bag weighs five pounds, and its seven pockets have enough room to store anything that matters.
