2010 Hot List: Golf Balls

Women's Golf Balls

The difference is noticeable

June 2010

Did you know that the average woman golfer swings a driver 60 to 65 miles per hour, or one-third slower than the average man? Her angle of attack is more shallow, and her typical ball flight is low and has little spin -- the opposite of most male players. To help women get more height and distance out of their shots, most golf-ball manufacturers make women-specific balls with soft cores that compress even under slight pressure, increasing ball speed for the slowest swingers. The majority of these balls have soft ionomer covers for increased feel and dimple patterns designed to add lift. Lift is crucial, because the longer the ball stays in the air, the more distance a slow swinger will achieve.
