'Tour Confidential': Aussie golfer's e-book a hit

By John Strege

Ewan Porter is an Australian golf professional, whose career pereptually foundered, notwithstanding two Web.com victories in three years. So he turned to media and already has found success easier to come by with the written word.

Last month, Porter's e-book, "Tour Confidential: Triumph & Torment -- A golfer's life on the global stage," was introduced and was the number one seller among golf books on Amazon.com's Kindle list. It also reached No. 1 among sports books on iTunes. He no doubt received an assist from the Twitter plug provided by Graeme McDowell, who wrote, "Interesting book written by one of the Aussie tour players @ewanports. Bit of an inside the ropes view of the tour."

"I have written a book that will open up people's eyes to the enjoyment, sacrifices, heartache, torture and isolation one endures in attempting to chase the dream of being a professional athlete," Porter wrote in a description of the book.

Golf Channel's Jerry Foltz in a blurb for the book wrote, "His God-given talent is world class...the flare with which he carried himself is second to none...his ability to self destruct is the stuff of legend." Trumping all that, Foltz wrote, is "his ability to openly and honestly share the emotional roller-coaster that life as an aspiring, nomadic, professional golfer dictates. That's a very rare gift."

Porter, 30, won the Web.com Tour's Moonah Classic in 2008 and the South Georgia Classic in 2010. But he made the cut in only 23 of 97 Web.com Tour starts and missed the cut in the three British Opens for which he qualified. He has said he would explore media opportunites, while still playing professional golf when opportunities present themselves.

Star Wars headcovers: May the course be with you

By John Strege

We're not sure when headcovers made the transition from functional to fanciful, but clearly they're no longer used simply to prevent woods from getting dinged.

Star Wars Headcovers.jpg

Headcovers these days are often reflections of one's personality or interests, even nickname. Tiger Woods' driver headcover, for instance, is a tiger with the Thai words for "love from Mom" stitched into it, handmade by his Thai mother, Kultida. Paula Creamer, the Pink Panther, as she's known, has a pink panther head cover.

Among the latest offerings in headcovers is a Star War series. Darth Vader (shown here), Yoda, Chewbacca, Stormtrooper and R2-D2 ($24.98) are available for drivers or hybrids through Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy, Hornung's Golf, Dick's Sporting Goods and other golf shops.

May the course be with you.

Puma Golf introduces earphones

PUMA Pro-Performance.jpg

By John Strege

Professional golfers have been taking their music to work for awhile now, at least to the practice tee and putting green, so it was inevitable perhaps that a golf company would take note and react.

The company was Puma Golf, which has introduced two styles of earphones, the Pro-Performance (shown above) and the El Diego, and has done so in a typically colorful fashion. The Pro-Performance is available in black, pink and vibrant orange, the latter a ubiquitous color in the life of Puma and Cobra staff player Rickie Fowler. The El Diego is available in black, pink, vibrant orange and red.

Each is equipped with a microphone to allow answering phone calls, as well as volume, play and pause controls.

"We are always looking for innovation and unique ways to develop our business that push the industry forward," Bob Philion, president of Cobra Puma Golf said in a news release. The Puma Golf Audio Collection fulfills a major opportunity in the market, bringing advanced technology to the golf course in a very relevant and fun way."

Fowler and Cobra and Puma's other most prominent staff players Lexi Thompson and Ian Poulter have all been known to listen to music while practicing.

The Pro-Performance sells for $79.99, the El Diego for $59.99, and are available at golf retailers, Apple stores and Apple.com.

A calf leather golf bag, yours for only $9,500

Treccani Milano Golf Bag.jpg

By John Strege

This falls into its own category: for the golfer who has everything and money to burn. It is a $9,500 golf bag from an Italian concern that specializes in hand-made shoes, including golf shoes it sells for nearly $1,000 a pair.

A product of Treccani Milano, the golf bag is hand made from your choice of calf (shown here), alligator or ostrich leather. A travel bag detailed in the same leather and color is included with the bag.

It is probably too late to order as a Christmas gift; a bag can take up to 12 weeks to craft with what the company calls "artisan labor."

We can't say where it fits among golf's most expensive bags, but by way of comparison, its price dwarfs this offering from Chiarugi ($3,613), another Italian company.

The John Daly Cocktail: Grip it and sip it

Original John Daly Cocktail.jpg

By John Strege

John Daly no longer drinks -- "4 years May," he wrote on Twitter -- but alcohol again will be part of his life with the introduction of The Original John Daly Cocktail, featuring three flavors, including the original: sweet tea, lemonade and vodka.

The business venture is in response to Daly's anger over bars across America serving John Dalys (Daly's former cocktail of choice, sweet tea, lemonade and vodka).

"My name is on 14 thou menus illegally not fair to me so I'm bringing my John Daly drink out its better," he wrote on Twitter.

Two years ago, he apparently set out to squelch bars featuring the John Daly on its menus, putting out this Twitter plea: "For all my fans out there hittin the bars & events I'm lookin for your help--ANY PRINTED MENUS, BANNERS OR ADS promoting the 'John Daly' drink--Can you please bring to my attention with a pic and/or a tweet of the bar location & brand of sweet tea! Thanks for lookin out!"

The Original John Daly Cocktail ("Grip it and sip it," it says on the top of the label, a takeoff of his renowned swing philosophy, grip it and rip) will debut in BevMo stores in California, Nevada and Arizona, with the intention of taking it globally, he wrote on Twitter.

"I don't drink anymore but tired of people using my name and serving a bad john Daly my drink is awesome," he wrote.
