Bomb & Gouge Blog

Time to chat

BOMB & GOUGE: Normally we’d try to use this space on a Monday after a tour event to talk about a current trend or perhaps a prototype we saw (anyone notice Jim Furyk using that prototype Odyssey putter??). But instead, kids, we’re gonna save ourselves for tomorrow. That’s when we’ll be chatting live from 3 p.m. until we get tired of typing or you run out of questions about the Golf Digest Hot List—our annual rankings of golf equipment. Have a question or simply want to question our selections? Here’s your chance. And if you’re nowhere near a computer at 3 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, January 16, you’re not out of luck. You can send in your questions ahead of time if you care to. Simply go here and ask away. We look forward to hearing from you.

Concerning: The Hot List, Mallet Putters, PING G5i CRAZ-E. "NOT" Beware the bobsledder/motorcycle man.

What the?

I don't get how that "NOT" comment is supposed to help me choose a putter. Maybe that comment has relevance in your part of the country. Anyway, all of the other "NOT" comments were helpful. I must have missed out on some current joke or something somewhere, but could you PLEASE explain exactly what the comment ("NOT" Beware the bobsledder/motorcycle man.) is supposed to mean.

GOUGE: The motorcycle/bobsledder man image is what some people see when they look down at the G5i Craz-E. The shield on his helmet is the blue half circle at the back rear portion of the putter. His arms reach out from the "helmet" to frame the face of the putter. Sometimes if you know it's there it can be a distraction.

Dear Hot List Editors:

The Hot List remains the best feature of your fine magazine. Even more impressive, I think, is the restraint you show in dealing with the insane people who write you about perceived problems with the project. I am thinking particularly of the published letter of approximately 300 words from the conspiracy theorist/blade afficionado. You may not have noticed, but his letter wasn't really about golf clubs. It was about him being crazy. I am fairly sure that when he finished his letter to you, he started another one, to The New York Times, explaining that the Holocaust is a myth.

Thanks again for all your hard work.

Kirk Giberson

P.S. By the way, on the issue of integrity, I suspect the folks at Acushnet may have noticed the 905R's absence from the Hot List. How is it you failed to keep your secret deal with this advertiser? I hope you returned your pay-off.

I really enjoy reading your blog and loved the Hot List section of this month's issue. I clicked on the link you have in your blog for the QA, but found that I could only get to the entire session if I was an ESPN insider. Why would you do a QA that was not available to your subscribers or available for us on this website? It seems like a bit of a waste of your time.

Sincerely,

John

GOUGE: I'm with you. I'll huddle up with the web dudes and try to get it solved. Thanks for pointing this out.
