Gearing up during the off-season

The action on the PGA Tour is thoroughly underway, but LPGA Tour players are still waiting for their first event of the 2011 season (the Honda LPGA Thailand, from Feb 17-20). With a noticeably longer break, we wondered how three of the tour's brightest players are keeping their games sharp to ensure the first-tee butterflies don't sabotage their scores.

Brittany Lincicome: The Competitor
Playing a few mini tour events has helped me keep my game sharp. We have so many months off between the last event of the season and the first, so if I don't stay competitive I'll be way too nervous on the first tee in Thailand. I need to stay competitive to get ready for that first event and get back into game mode. And I hit it long enough, so distance hasn't prevented me from playing good.

Also, I don't like to practice, so I'd much rather play. Most of the time, I'll play 18 holes with my buddies, and when I do, I always play the back tees.

Yardage doesn't bother me. I'd rather be on the course where I'm going to be playing than on the practice green and driving range. But when I do practice, I've been putting a little bit more than I have in the past.

During the off-season, I found a new friend who plays in the Hooters tour events. I've never had anybody to practice with, so it's been pretty fun and productive off-season. Am I interested in dating him? No! That might be selfish on my end because he's a good-looking guy, but I want to keep it business. I'm getting a lot out of having him as a practice partner.

Beatriz Recari: The Straightforward One
I've kept my off-season routine pretty simple. I took some weeks off after the Championship to rest, and since then I've been practicing and training in gym. I generally practice for five hours a day, and I work out in the gym three days a week. In the winter season, I focus more on strength training and balance to keep me going throughout the year. During the season, I stick with the weights, but I mix in more cardio.

Since I played so well during second half of last season, I've kept doing what I was doing, both on the range and on the course. In the middle of last season, I just started to trust myself, and I finally started to learn from my mistakes. By having a certain attitude, I've been getting the results I want. My theory is pretty simple: You have to work to get the results, and you have to believe in yourself. And that's not a secret.

Christina Kim: The Thinker
My off-season was short because I played a European Tour event, so it ended a week later than everyone else's, and it'll start two weeks earlier. So my goal for the shorter off-season was to sleep and do normal things. I did a lot of hanging out at home and just decompressing. The farthest I ever drove was to go downtown. I needed to be at home.

And one thing I did a lot of this offseason was planning and plotting and taking time to really think about things. My primary goal this year is to enjoy myself. Think about it: I go to Japan every year, I go to France every year and the United Kingdom. I get to ride elephants in Thailand. First and foremost, I go to these places to work. But how many people in the world get the chance to go to some of the places I've been? I'm trying to remember that I should incorporate being responsible while having fun. I'm privileged.
