There are island greens and then there are island greens. This rocky land mass -- a true island -- is the 194-yard third hole at Punta Mita Golf Club. At high tide, players ride out to the green in an amphibious shuttle.
The Jack Nicklaus-designed course is part of the luxurious Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (fourseasons.com/puntamita) in Riviera Nayarit, an easy 45-minute drive up the coast from Puerto Vallarta. Opened in 1999, the course features nine holes along either the Pacific Ocean or Banderas Bay. Golf Digest's Planet Golf ranking lists it as the country's sixth-best course.
Rooms at the resort start at $535 a night. The green fee: $195. A second course by Nicklaus is under construction onsite.
