Don't like the greens? Take it up with the robot.

Back in college, my summer job was mowing greens at Oakmont Golf Club in Santa Rosa, Calif. What I do now is not far removed from what I did then. The romantic in me still loves being on the golf course at sunrise. My meticulous side still appreciates clean lines of fresh cut grass. To this day, I'll walk the perimeter of a green and mentally critique another mower's attention to detail. But as Ron Whitten reports, times are changing:

Calling all buddies trips

Over the years we’ve received thousands of entries for the Golf Digest Ambush, where I surprise readers on their buddies trips and toast them with everything from wine to free golf balls. I printed out almost every one, and last week I gave the stack to Peter Henry, who is organizing all relevant information: emails, group size, destination, etc.

Through 1,000 entries, 117 groups went to Myrtle Beach, and 35 groups have been on 30 or more trips. Kimber Aderman of Bolton, Conn., has been on 64 buddies trips. Jim Conway of Aston, Pa., has been on 51. Bill Dranginis of Litchfield, Conn., has been on 50, and so has Barry Beatty of Sauble Beach, Ontario.

On Thursday I sent an email to those 1,000 groups, inviting them to the Buddies Golf Getaway Oct. 21-23 in Orlando.

ESPN Radio: Fall golf, buddies trips and my favorite destination

On Saturday I was on ESPN Radio with John Patrick of the Augusta Golf Show. Patrick wanted to know about fall golf destinations, the Greenbrier, buddies trips and if I see courses and resorts successfully navigating their way through rough economic waters.

I always ask celebrities and tour players: Pebble, Pinehurst or Bandon Dunes? Patrick asked:

"I'm going to let you take a buddies trip one week a year for the rest of your life, but you can only go to one location for the rest of your life, where are you going?"

How would you have responded to that question? Answer in the comments box below, or send me a tweet @Matt_Ginella.
