Travel Tuesday: Spring Deals At French Lick

Bird_2.jpg
I was born in 1971. As a boy in my hood (Santa Rosa, Calif.), if you were anywhere near a pair of high tops or a hard court you were either wearing No. 32 or No. 33, even if you had to write in the numbers on a white v-neck t-shirt with a black marker. I was always a Magic fan; my friends Dan Culbertson and Tim Hetrick represented Larry Legend. (Dan and Tim could shoot the Jumper; I’m still perfecting the baby hook.)

Even though I was all-32 all-the-time, as I grew older and after I moved to the East Coast, I evolved. I’m now a fan of both. Any footage of old Lakers/Celtics showdowns ranks up there with stumbling upon replays of “The Godfather” or “Braveheart”; I put the clicker down and settle in until the end.

So, on the 54th birthday of Larry Joe Bird (Dec. 7), I’ve compiled a few things specific to golf in French Lick.

In the story you’ll find out Bird used to run the hills that is now the Pete Dye course (above). I’ve never understood the $350 green fee (plus a $30 caddie fee), but they’re offering some fair packages listed below. (The Ross course is a lot more fun and much more affordable.)

Click here for a blog post on meeting Larry Bird’s high school basketball coach, who just happened to be mowing fairways at the Pete Dye Course at French Lick when I was in town.

Gary Holland gives me a video tour of The House That Bird Built. (Kids would hang from the rafters to see a lot of nothing but net.)

And here are the resort’s spring stay-and-play packages:

Two nights at the French Lick Springs Hotel (or Upgrade to the West Baden Springs Hotel), two-hours of skill refresher-instruction followed up with two days of unlimited golf at the Valley Links course and/or the Donald Ross Course. Package price starts at $369.

I’m guessing The Legend, who’s still a good stick and notoriously tight with money, will try to take advantage of the Early Bird.
