Tiger's Course Design In Dubai Is In Trouble

If you're receiving Golf World Monday you'd already know one of Tiger's debut designs might be destined for dust. Or sand.

Snow Delay At Bandon Dunes

I received an e-mail today from Jake Ramirez, subject line: “Sunday at Bandon.”

Ramirez attached this picture of the 18th at the Bandon Dunes course:

And then came another e-mail, the subject line: “This AM.”

Another attached picture, same angle of the 18th green, two days later:

Bottling John Daly

In September I read that John Daly had discovered a John Daly is an Arnold Palmer (lemonade and iced tea) plus some vodka.

Frankly, I was shocked Daly had only recently discovered his name was associated with a specific drink; he seemed flat mad. So mad, in fact, that he commissioned his 78,000 Twitter followers (@PGA_JohnDaly) to alert him to the locations that were using his name without authorization.

Pinehurst No. 2A Gets An A+

Pinehurst_20.jpg
Thanks to Twitter follower @hriefs for passing on this article from The Pilot about the renovations at Pinehurst No. 2, which closed yesterday and won’t reopen until March.

The Pilot's Howard Ward is impressed with the changes, writing:

Frankly, I wasn’t too sure that the changes being made to the old Donald Ross creation were going be a hit with golfers.

But after spending an hour riding the course and discussing the changes with Pinehurst manager of golf courses and grounds Bob Farren, I’ve made up my mind.

I like it.

Ward goes on to say that Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw still have some work to do, but that ultimately amateurs and pros will appreciate the restoration. It’s a revealing read with a lot of good quotes from Farren, such as:

“It’s kind of like refurbishing an old house. We’re taking up all the old shag carpet and we’re finding all those beautiful hardwood floors underneath. We’re pulling away layers. It’s hard pulling away 70 years of layers, but we’re finally getting there.”

I just skipped ahead to March in my 2011 calendar: Priority: Pinehurst. I’ll see you there.

Will Herb Kohler And Pete Dye Ride Again?

Dye_Kohler.jpg
It’s like stumbling upon a bear cub in the woods: You know the mama bear can’t be too far away. Which is about the time you look at your friend and say, “I don’t have to be fast enough to outrun the bear, I just need to be fast enough to outrun you.”

That one never gets old. And the point is, course builder Pete Dye (left) was seen at Sea Island, Ga., a few weeks ago, which tells me Herb Kohler (right) is getting closer to getting involved in the land grab after the resort’s bankruptcy.

Battle Of Backyard Greens: Tiger vs. Smoltz

You know you're rich when . . . you have a golf hole in your backyard. You know filthy really rich when . . . you have backyard golf course.

After Ambushing a group of wild women in Ball Ground, Ga. (click here for that story), I found myself in John Smoltz's backyard (click here for that story).

Now that Tiger's backyard course is done, I offer up the question, which would you rather play?

Tiger's:

Or his buddy, Smoltz's:

My vote is for Smoltz, he has a better baseball field.

Don't Read This!!! (Pilots Tell All)

“There’s no such thing as a water landing. It’s called crashing into the ocean.” -Pilot, South Carolina

I used to hate to fly. Or, I should say, I used to assume every flight I took would be my last. While en route to the airport I’d call every member of my immediate family, clear up any outstanding disagreements, and I would end the conversations with a heart-felt, “I love you.” (As most of you know by now, I’m a sensitive and sappy cancer.)

It didn’t end with multiple goodbyes. As I boarded the plane, I was always a skin-sack full of bones and anxious energy. While everyone else ignored the request to review the safety guide, I made sure I had a removable seat as a floatation device and that the seat pocket in front of me contained a barf bag. Throughout any flight to what always seemed like Mars and back, I’d grab the armrest of my seat at the slightest brush of turbulence. My stomach was between my ears and the arm of my stranger of a neighbor was pinned down and at the mercy of my pale fingernails.
