Golf Digest Ambush: Are You Next?

To ambush: The act of concealing yourself and lying in wait to attack by surprise.

In May I Ambushed Tom Messmer, Tim O'Neill and Mike Cornelius at Pinehurst. They were there to celebrate their 40th birthdays. I gave them golf balls, scotch glasses, hats, cigars and a round of golf. We played Pinehurst No. 2 and Pine Needles. We ate, drank, set land-speed records on bikes doing the loop in front of the Manor Inn and together we ambushed one of golf's living legends--Peggy Kirk Bell. You can read more about the trip in the August issue of Golf Digest.

Ambush_final_2 I've Ambushed five groups out of 800 entries so far. It's time to pick number six.

I've narrowed it down to the following five buddies trips taking place in June. One of them will be featured in the September issue of Golf Digest.

From Michael Chao of Broomfield, Colo.: When: Friday, June 26th and Saturday, June 27th. Where: Keystone Resort, in Colorado on Friday. Breckenridge Golf Club and the Ravens at Three Peaks on Saturday. We have a group of 20 guys who have been getting together annually for 15 years. Most people in the group are old college buddies. We've named our event "Birdies and Beer." Our event is unique for a number of reasons: 1) The format. We play 3-4 rounds over two days. First day everyone plays their own ball. Based on the results of that day, we nominate captains at dinner who draft a scramble team for Saturday's trophy tournament. 2)  The players. We've got all levels of playing ability. A handful of scratch players who played college golf. Several single-digit handicappers. A bunch of weekend warrior 15-25 handicappers. And a couple of 30-plus handicappers who attend more for the social aspects. Everyone is welcome. The only rule is that it's a guy's weekend. No wives and no kids allowed. 3) The trophy. Like the Stanley Cup, the trophy for the winning scramble team is handed down from one year to the next. Winning team members have their name engraved on the trophy. And each team member gets to keep the trophy in their house for a month. 4) The tiebreaker. In the event that more than one team ends up with the lowest scramble score, the winner is decided based on a beer "boat-race". In 15 years, its come down to a "boat-race" only a couple of times. 5) Location. This group is partial to Arizona, Palm Springs, Las Vegas and Monterey. It's the first time we're playing mountain resort golf. Getting our group photographed and mentioned in Golf Digest would be a highlight of the 15 years of this event!

From Steve Fraser of Toronto, Ontario: The "Mad Max Annual Invitational" in Prince Edward Island, June 25th through 28th. Our group started in '03 with a buddies trip to Prince Edward Island, Canada. The invites are sent early in the year by our good friend (and better organizer) Dave Power. The lively banter continues until we all arrive in Halifax on the day of departure. The group is mostly made up of guys from Corner Brook, Newfoundland that have been the best of friends since before we can remember. The first year we had nine players, we've had as few as four, but we refuse to miss a year. It's a lot more about the camaraderie than the golf. Plaques are awarded for the "Top Golfer" based on money won in our daily skins game and for "Best Newcomer/Best Laugh" for outstanding performance in the off-course activities. We have an annual "Beer Match", which consists of two man teams. The scoring is a little unusual in that one stroke is deducted from your overall score for each adult beverage you consume. If you shoot 92 and have 12 beers, it's a total of 80. As Dave points out in one of his many e-mails about the trip, "It is a great time. If you're not a good golfer, don't worry about it. The best golfers the last three years have been Ari, Chipper Sr., and Higs. Guys like Shane and Dr. Rum have also enjoyed success while not breaking 100. It is more about having some laughs." I don't think I could sum it up any better. The beautiful part of this is the investment. It will cost no more then $500 all-in, per person, and maybe less once we get things confirmed (last year was $480). This covers the four rounds (carts and range balls), cottages, and vehicle rentals. I certainly hope this qualifies our group as "unique" and would look forward to seeing you in a beautiful part of Canada at the end of June.

From Sam Pavoni of Aliso Viejo, Calif.: We're playing the Peter Hay, par 3 course at Pebble Beach on June 22nd, Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz twice on June 23rd, and then Poppy Hills and Bayonet on the 24th. This is the "Second Annual Cheers To Honor Invitational" (I'm a founding member and the 2007 champion). The other two founding members, who are also my only other friends as I am theirs, are friends from High School. One of them played on my high school team and is 26 years old but he looks like he's 12. The other guy played for a rival team in high school and decided to get married and ruin all of our lives (I still haven't forgiven him for this). In fact, he almost tried to ruin this year's trip by getting his wife pregnant again, but luckily the arrival of the baby won't interfere with the trip. Back to golf. We even got a perpetual trophy for the tournament. It currently sits in my office at home. We literally send 15-30 e-mails a day for the nine months leading up to the trip and they're hysterical. My buddy's wife made me sign a contract saying that I wouldn't drive unsafely and endanger her husband's life. (Apparently my friend told her stories about last year's trip). So what do you think?

From Brandon Dean Lowery of Charlotte, NC: One of my really great friends, Jack Burris and I, started a golf trip five years ago. We realized, as we were reaching our mid-twenties, that life was getting faster paced and it was harder and harder to see all the guys we knew from our days in college at Chapel Hill. We started the "Barou Cup," named after the famous putter that failed Judge Smails in Caddyshack. The Barou is a Ryder Cup format pitting Team Charlotte against Team National. We have a group of 20 guys; 10 who live in or are from Charlotte, and 10 from around the country. We have shirts, hats and even a Claret Jug that we ordered from St. Andrews for the team captain to retain. We have team logos, pairing sheets, best-ball formats and singles matches. We have been to Myrtle Beach, Harbour Town, Innisbrook, and Sugarloaf, Maine. For '08 we will be in Charleston, South Carolina playing at Wild Dunes from June 26th-29th. Team National goes for its fifth in a row, but Team Charlotte thinks we've made some progress. This trip has taken on a life of its' own and has become something everyone refuses to miss. We have everything from scratch golfers to guys who could not break 100 on a par-3 with Butch Harmon on their bag. Some guys turn in early; some drink their face off until the next tee time. Come on, step it up, AMBUSH the Barou!

From Larry Wagner of Bixby, Okla.:
We will be in Kansas City from June 26th through the 29th. There will be a round of golf every day and baseball (Royals vs. Cardinals) on Friday and Saturday nights, and Sunday afternoon. Baseball tickets are already procured and the tee times will be set a couple weeks in advance. This is a unique trip because at its' core is four guys (I am one) who went to grad school together at Oklahoma State. Then we went our separate ways with jobs and families, but for 11 years now, we have blocked off a weekend every summer to get together, play golf, watch baseball, and treat each other like dirt. This summer we'll have eight guys in our group (other years there have been as many as 16). We've taken our trips to Houston, Arlington, St. Louis, and Kansas City and there has always been one constant--cherished camaraderie. There's a guy in our group who plays to a single digit handicap and there's a guy in our group who plays four times a year--those four times are all on this trip. The rest of us are somewhere in between. But it doesn't matter, we pair up, tee it up, and have more fun than we deserve. So I'll do to you like we do with a lot of our friends; I'll extend the offer to join us for a great time with a great bunch of guys who have used golf for 11-plus years not to occupy our time, but to enrich our time together and create memories that will last forever. Oh, and I'm hoping your publication doesn't mind if we take liberty with the USGA rulebook. We play by the rules, but have added one; "There shall be no stroke counted if the individual playing from the tee box area is able to catch their drive prior to it landing." It almost happened once so we thought we better address the issue before it actually happened.

Use the "Comments" link below if you care to weigh-in on the decision. I'll be busy "concealing myself and lying in wait to attack by surprise."

Anyone that plays for the Barou Cup should be the choice. While the others we worthy, this one seems cut and dry.

Here's a few reasons why Birdies and Beer should be the next Golf Digest Ambush:

1) A great bunch of guys. This group loves getting together so much that I've heard the words..."Well, my wife's due date isn't until the weekend after Birdies...I'm in!"
2) The beer chugging tie-breaker...Phil Mickelson would be a lock if the PGA Tour employed the beer chugging tie-breaker that this group uses!
3) Snow in the photo! All of the 5 previous ambushes have great group photos with nice green grass backgrounds. If you ambushed this group you'd see snowcapped peaks in the background...Maybe even snow on the ground!

I may be biased since I'm in this group, but my vote is for Birdies and Beer!

See you June 27th and 28th!

As a lucky ambushee, I feel qualified to give my two cents. In my mind I have it narrowed down to the colorado group and the Candians. The Colorado trip sounds like a fun bunch and I agree, snow in a summer golf trip picture sounds cool. The Canadian are playing in some unusal places. As the Golf Digest travel guys you coudl get to some different courses on that trip. All in all the Colorado guys are my choice.

If you are chosen enjoy it, cause we had a blast. Matty is a great guy and a lot of fun.

I may or may not be a little biased, but I guarantee you will have a good time. We have a good mix of players, from very good (mini-tour types) down to the once a year guys. The funny thing is that the it always seems that the once a year guys decide the tournament with some heroic shot.

Be forewarned though that one of the Deheras brothers will win after rigging the draft in their favor. I would guess that a Deheras brother has won just about every year we have played this tournament. Cheating Deherases.

Go to Youtube and type in Birdies and Beer as a search team to see last year's drinkoff. Yes, we conducted our boat race in the parking lot of Bayonet in Monterrey. The funniest part of the story is that one of the contestants from the losing team (I was on the winning team) is a high school principal and his kids found the video of him chugging beer in a parking lot. Classy Mr. Bolton.

I had been willing to sit back and have the MMI (Mad Max Invitational) sell itself on its own merits but as the cheerleading seems to have begun from within the other camps I figured I should fire off something in support of our cause, not that I really think that it is required.

We are in year 6 and expect 14 bodies to attend (note I did not say golfers). This year we have attendees from as far west as Alberta and east from Newfoundland (where the founding group has its roots) and a returnee from year 3 who has just returned from spending 2 years in the sub-Arctic.

With no disrespect to the other groups references to beer, Newfoundlanders are legendary in this category (include rum in that as well) so you can be assured of a Chuck Barris-like experience.

Add to this such things as our handicap system to allow all players the chance to win, our raffle, our excursions into the downtown night life of Charlottetown, fried chicken exploits, and the year's worth of stories which just add to those from year's past it would be a shame if you missed it.

In either case, we will have a great time as always.

This will be my 3rd time I've made the cut for the MadMax Invitational. All I can say Matty is that when I've been asked "How was the golf trip" all one can do is pause, look off into the distance, give your head a shake, and respond "You had to be there".

Look forward to meeting you.

Birdies & Beer . . . It took me 12 damn years to get my name engraved on that cup. Same story every year. I would practice my tail off and get to Birdies and crumble like a stale cookie. No more, baby! As a two-time champ, my annual trek to make out with the trophy is one of the highlights of my year.

We all talk a big game, but don't kid yourself: the only reason we all still get to go every year is that this trip pre-dates all of our marriages. I had it written into my vows.

Posted by littleman June 16, 2008 6:46 AM

As a 14 time attendee (soon to be 15 times) of Birdies & Beer, I thought I would add some comments in support of our trip.

First, this group has been together for 15 years. We've played everywhere from Phoenix to Palm Springs to Vegas to Monterey. Since we've been together so long, nothing is held back when it comes to the trash talking. It makes for some great comedy every year.

Second, the drink off for the tie breaker is 100 times more exciting than an 18 hole Monday playoff for the US Open...well, maybe not, but it's close. The drink off has actually come into play 5 times over 14 years and each one has been memorable. We've had a 3 team drink off, a drink off that had to be re-done 4 times due to various disputes, a drink off where one poor soul was so nervous he forgot to start drinking when it was his turn (he's never lived that one down), and of course, last year's edition which can be seen on YouTube as mentioned in the comment above. Matty G can only hope for this year's tournament to end in a tie.

Third, our school yard draft brings back the days of playing dodge ball on the playground and hoping not to be the last one picked. The captains have the daunting task of trying to pick skilled players, players that can drink in case of a tie, and not being stuck with the last pick, because every player has to contribute two tee shots and quite often the last guys picked aren't hitting it very far, much less in the fairway.

My vote is for Birdies & Beer XV!!! See you in Colorado!

Well I feel obligated to make a few comments on the "Mad Max Invitational". Last year was my first time at this tournament. I would get an invite every year but "I didn't golf". Last year after finding out that "golf" is only what we are supposed to tell our wives!! I have to tell you that I've been on some crazy trips in the past where you really needed a "head cam" to figure out what went on during the trip, however, this tornament is off the charts!! If you decide to check out the Mad Max you will be very pleased with your decision as I was last year. I can tell you that I will never miss another. If I were you, I'd invest in a head cam!! I'm not sure if you ever drank with a Newfie, but if you're willing to experience it then I'd invest in your own personal seat belt as well!! Anyhow, I guess we'll see you in PEI in a weeks time!! Buckle up!!Shaner

The most interesting thing you'll find at Birdies is the spectrum of personalities meeting in Colorado.

Just prior to the event, we usually have someone breakdown every players odds, golfing skills, personality, swing and then assign each player with a letter grade.

Over the last 14 events, I've seen many players develop their skills and take an active interest in golf. However, it's the cup they covet..the holy grail. Ingraved with the all the past winners. I believe the trophy is on it's second added tier/ addition, like the Stanley Cup.

After seeing so many of these I put my brother Doug at a 2 to 1. He's won this not only half the time, not only on his golfing skills, but his ability to pick putting and drinking players.

Please consider our group this year. Watching the draft Friday night, under the timed clock is pretty funny. However, the mini mock drafts before is hands down a reason to attend....Wally.

Matty, all I have to say about the Mad Max Invitational is we had a guy that shit himself.

Posted by capers8 June 17, 2008 6:57 PM

Dear Matty G,

I am the organizer of the Mad Max Golf Event. I did not sign up for the event, as that was done by one of our 6-time almuni members Steve Fraser. I figured I would chime in with a quick post on the event as some others in our group have painted this out to be a Canadian Aminal House. It certainly is that, but there is a lot more to it.

We play courses in Prince Edward Island, which is Canada's version of Myrtle Beach (without the great weather of couse). Prince Edward Island has 10 of the top 100 Courses in Canada as rated by our national newspaper the Globe and Mail, and nearly 5% of the top 350 courses in North America as rated by your magazine Golf Digest - all with 45 minutes of each other.

We are playing Glen Afton (an older course next to our cottages), Eagles Glenn (a really beautiful course with a Scottish flavour), Belvedere (the oldest course in PEI and home to LPGA player Lori Kane) and lastly Fox Meadow (another centrally located hidden gem). I have played most courses in North/South Carolina and Phoenix over the past 10 years, and PEI offerings rank up there with all of them.

In terms of the group, you could not have a more friendly and funny team to follow around. Money games are everywhere, but it is all about bragging rights.

Hope to see you. Please bring a camera as I outlawwed pictures after the first season. So, we have never taken a picture in 6 years in PEI. For obvious reasons......

Dear Matty G: I have read the entries for the 5 finalists for the Ambush. With all due respect to the other finalists, the choice is clear: Birdies and Beer must prevail. Come West my friend. This is a special group: diverse as the United Nations, all college educated, professionals (lawyers, accountants, bankers, executives, business owners, brokers, and a high school principal to name a few), community leaders, parents, and good citizens. This event transends golf. Birdies is an extended family. Members of this distinct group comprise of the Godfathers (and their wives) to each of my three children and the Groomsmen in my wedding 14 long years ago. Come host the coveted Faux Cup with us. Relish in our traditions. Come celebrate our 15th annual event. We won't disappoint.

P.S. I just subscribed to Golf Digest because I'm confident that you will hand deliver my first copy in Colorado next week.

Barou Cup.. Barou Cup...

I had the distinct honor of meeting this group of golfers in Harbor Town a few years ago!! What a crazy bunch of guys!! They were all relatively young (mid 20's-30ish). I was on the practice tee when a huge group of guys strolled up. I struck up a conversation with a few of them and found out they were college buddies from North Carolina who were there on an annual golf trip. You could tell some were not far from the realms of college life when 2 guys showed up after partying all night ready to tee off! I thought it was great to see a group of 20+ guys starting a tradition in the name of the Billy Barou!!! These guys made a lasting impression on me...I would love to hear more about them.
