Most property owners at Mississippi's Lake Caroline desperately wanted the 18-hole Caroline Golf Course to remain open. Apart from allowing them a convenient place to play golf, it was also a lot better to look at than the 300-home development its owner was proposing.

Now it looks like the locals will get their way, reports the Madison County Herald. Though the Madison Board of Supervisors approved a change in zoning last December that would allow residential development at the golf course, the supes will hold a hearing next week to weigh taking a mulligan.

First Bank of McComb holds title to the property now, having bought it from developer Craig Foshee for $2.5 million earlier this year, aims to sell it to Randy Watkins once the zoning change is complete. A golf pro who played briefly on tour,  Watkins already owns the Whisper Lake and Patrick Farms courses, also in Mississippi.

"I don't foresee [the rezoning] being any problem,"  Board of Supervisors President Paul Griffin told the paper. "It's what the homeowners want, and it's what the property owners want. We're glad to see we've got everybody on the same page."
