SCIENTIST: JOHN AXE, PH.D.
- A semi-retired research physicist, Axe, 74, spent nearly 30 years at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y., where he studied neutron and X-ray scattering studies of elastic and magnetic properties of materials. "My prediction," says Axe, a 6-handicap who lives in Florida, "is that in less than five years, balls with seams will be in museums along with 3- and 4-irons."

Scientist: MARTIN BROUILIETTE, PH.D.
- Brouillette, 45, is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec. He earned his doctorate in aeronautics from Caltech, where he was also the assistant men's golf coach.
"Most manufacturers know what they are doing, or at least are very good at manufacturing. The rules, however, are making their design space quite reduced."

Scientist: DAVID LEE, PH.D.
- Professor of Physics at Gordon College in Wenham, MA. Before teaching he spent 12 years directing research and development in advance materials, focusing on metastable alloys and other novel functional inorganic materials.
"Driver technology has improved greatly. Anyone with a driver more than four years old should upgrade."

Scientist: DOUGLAS MATSON, PH.D.
- Matson, 51, is a professor of mechanical engineering at Tufts University with expertise in materials processing. He has worked with the International Space Station, planning flights for satellites.
"Driver technology has gone about as far as it can within the allowable window. Thus production techniques will drive price as the final differentiator."
