2009 Hot List: The Process & Glossary
Arriving At Hot List Wisdom
-
COEFFICIENT OF RESTITUTION (COR)
- Used by manufacturers to refer to the springlike effect of a flexing clubface. The USGA limit is .83, which refers to the efficiency of energy transfer between two colliding bodies (clubhead and ball). For example, if a ball is projected at a face at 100 miles per hour, it must bounce off at 83 mph or less for the club to be conforming.
-
CUPFACE
- In this construction the faceplate is part of the front portion of the crown, sole and skirt. This pushes the joint farther from the face, allowing the face's perimeter to be thinner.
-
FLANGE
- The part of a putter that projects back from the face.
-
FORGED
- A way of manufacturing a clubhead in which heated metal is stamped into shape.
-
leading edge
- The most forward part of the sole, opposite the trailing edge.
-
MOMENT OF INERTIA (MOI)
- The measure of a club's resistance to twisting on off-center hits (sometimes called forgiveness). The USGA limit for drivers is 5,900 grams/cm².
-
TOE HANG
- The angle the toe of the putter deviates from horizontal when balanced at the shaft tip. In general, the greater this angle, the more suited the head is to arced strokes.
