ABSOLUTE POWER

Photos By J.D. Cuban - I realize today's clubs and balls are a lot better than they used to be. But the distances some of these guys hit the golf ball are mind-boggling. I was fourth in driving distance at 273 yards back in the early '80s. That's barely in the top 200 now. Making courses longer is just slowing down the scoring onslaught. On a 500-yard par 4, a lot of these guys are hitting driver, 7-iron.

JUST THE BASICS
- I try to keep it simple. I don't even carry raingear because I can't swing in it. I just carry a windshirt.

SECOND CHANCES
- You can always look back and say I could've practiced a little harder, or I should've worked out a little harder, or I should've eaten less and had less to drink. Gone to bed earlier. (That's certainly not the problem now. I go to bed about 9 every night.) But I should've won more. Twenty-something second-place finishes is crazy [He has 27]. It would've been nice to say that I had won 20 times instead of 13. Maybe if I had practiced a little bit harder, that might have been the case. Maybe.

when the heat is on
- I carry five gloves, and if I'm really sweating, I'll put on wristbands. I don't care how it looks. You have to hold on to the club

old school
- I played Ping Eye2s for 20 years, and I still carry Eye2 wedges -- from Ping's stash of beryllium-copper wedges for tour players.
