Not the same old bag
Equipment: Hot List
If good design is the glimmer in God's eye, then the 20 golf bags that make our annual Hot List advance this simple container toward divine perfection. Pack mules might not care about ergonomic efficiencies, but they've never had to worry about fishing for a rainsuit on the 17th tee. The best bags take nothing for granted and solve every problem you never thought you'd have--before you have it. The gold and silver medalists presented here were selected by our Hot List judges.

1
-
HOT LIST GOLD
- BAGBOY TRACTION FX
- There are 12 pockets on this lightweight trekker. The coolest is the bottom ball pocket that houses a full-bag rain cover that's stitched in like a tongue. Ready to unroll quickly when the clouds open, you'll wish it was this easy to put on your rainsuit. $100, bagboycompany.com

2
- CALLAWAY XTT XTRA-LITE
- It weighs just four pounds, so you'll have a hard time finding a lighter bag with equivalent function. The eight-inch top has six full-length dividers. A new Strap•ology feature lets you carry easily on one or both shoulders. The flexible base always sits flat. $140, callawaygolf.com

3
- CALLAWAY ORG.14 WEEKENDER
- It's a cart bag with lots of amenities. Clever zippers let you expand storage capacity and remove the 12-pack ready, thermal-lined beverage pocket for a rinse. One of two lined valuables pouches is hidden inside. The side putter pit keeps the flat stick handy. $160, callawaygolf.com

4
- IZZO AS2
- This is the latest from a company known for its bags. The model name stands for Active Sport Suspension: that is, a system of nylon cords integrated with the straps to help the bag hang evenly. The bag's molded ergonomic shoulder pads help improve your comfort level. $150, izzo.com

5
- OGIO ATLAS
- A padded sunglasses pocket, an elastic oversize towel loop and an isolated wet/dry chamber are among its neat features. Our favorite, however, is the zipperless ball pocket that easily snaps open and shut, which can take the sting out of reaching for a provisional ball--sort of. $180, ogio.com

6
- PING HOOFER VANTAGE
- The primary strap retracts at both ends, so even a caveman won't put the left strap on the right shoulder, or vice versa. The polypropylene fabric is durable and lightweight, and the insulated water-bottle pocket has its own drain. $170, pinggolf.com

EDITORS' CHOICE
- SUN MOUNTAIN SUPERLIGHT 3.5 W/ HUG
- Foam-padded arms "hug" your waist and makes the bag hang parallel to the ground. By shifting weight from the shoulders to the hips, this already lightweight bag feels like nothing. You'll notice the difference come the 18th hole. $200, sunmountain.com

8
- SUN MOUNTAIN C-130
- Like its military airlift name-sake, this bag's payload goes beyond the call of duty. It has two full-length clothing pockets, two lined valuables pockets and an external putter tube. The reverse-orientation top is designed for cart-ready convenience. $170, sunmountain.com
