To every sand bunker, there is a purpose. Yes, some of them are traps

Bunkers are far more than just sandy holes in the ground. They're a state of mind, setting the tone for the round, disclosing the character of the course, revealing the attitude of the architect. Bunkers can be saviors or executioners, beacons or surprises, annoyances or eye candy. Nowadays, most of them are money pits, because golfers expect their hazards to be flawless.

If you think you know everything about bunkers, you need to encounter more of them on more courses. They're as diverse as those who design them, shape them, rake them and curse them.

The original art form, carved from rolling linksland by animals huddling against winter winds, further excavated by hackers over countless summers. Pot bunkers remind us that golf can be a cruel game.
