Erin Hills vs. Chambers Bay
Two new public-course behemoths vie for a U.S. Open

CHAMBERS BAY

Southwest of Tacoma, Wash., along the Carr Inlet of southern Puget Sound, Chambers Bay is land reclamation of the highest order. Design partners Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Bruce Charlton, along with associate Jason Blasi, shifted some 1.4 million cubic yards of sand to transform a gravel quarry into a rugged, jagged 7,585-yard par-72 links with fast-running fairways, undulating greens and slightly rumpled ribbons of tees, all grassed in fescue, reminiscent of a U.S. Open site.

The 425-yard par-4 16th (Beached), shown here, separated from the inlet by a steep, deep waste bunker and an active railroad line, features a treacherous back-right finger of putting surface. Cost to play: $135 Mon.-Thur., $150 Fri.-Sun. Caddies available. chambersbaygolf.com
