David Duval on why Tiger playing Wyndham could be a good thing

August 14, 2015

Tiger Woods in all likelihood will miss the cut in a third straight major championship, but his decision to play in the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., next week might prove beneficial, Golf Channel analyst David Duval said Friday night.

Why? He doesn't necessarily need his driver at Sedgefield Country Club, Duval said.

"I've actually played there before and taken the driver out of the bag," Duval said. "Some of the work he's been doing on his golf swing and the way he aligns and aims the golf ball with the irons and 3-wood, when you can kind of trap it and move it around that golf course, it might suit him well. It might prove to a very key turning point in what he's trying to do right now.

"I like what he says about how he thinks he's progressing and what he's trying to accomplish. Joe's [Joe LaCava, his caddie] been there before. I'm sure a lot of other players have talked to him and told him, This is a golf course where you can move it around. You've got to make some golf shots.'

"I think one of the key things for Tiger right now is manipulating and forcing golf shots. Force a cut here, force a draw there. Don't just free wheel. The golf course in Greensboro sets up perfectly for that."
